What is a trigger point?

Trigger point therapy is a procedure used to treat painful areas of the muscle that contain trigger points or severe knots in the muscle that form when the muscles do not or cannot relax. The trigger points may cause irritation of the surrounding nerves and cause referred pain which is pain that is felt in other areas of the body.

What causes trigger points?

Trigger points can happen in a few different ways. Often, there are several contributing factors. Some possible causes include:

  • Repetitive strain, including occupational and heavy exercise stress
  • Traumatic injury
  • Sedentary lifestyle with little-to-no physical movement
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Psychological stress, including depression and anxiety
  • Inadequate sleep
  • Poor posture
  • Fibromyalgia

The duration of relief can vary, typically lasting from a few days to a few months.
